for Sacred Hoop Ministry. Journeys Counseling Center, 320 Burdette St., Woodland Park, CO 80863, 719-687-6927. Barbara began her college career as an art major at Kent State University. She quickly recognized that painting was a non-fulfilling career for her so she changed her focus. Her professional life then went in the direction of nursing. Barbara graduated as a Registered Nurse having received her Associates of Science in Nursing in 1972 from Rockland Community College, and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1976 from Dominican College in New York where she majored in Psychiatric Nursing. Barbara obtained her Masters in Addiction Counseling in 1995 from American College, and she worked at Westchester County Medical Center for five years, first on a Medical Unity, then on a Psychiatric Ward. She transferred to the Drug Addiction and Alcoholism Center where she worked for three years before moving to Colorado in 1977. The Pikes Peak Mental Health Center hired Barbara in 1977 to establish an out-patient substance abuse counseling program to serve rural Teller County. Utilizing both her medical and psychiatric knowledge, Barbara realized that nearly every person with substance abuse problems had, at the root of the issue, untreated trauma. Believing that she was limited in her ability to help people truly heal in her current setting, Barbara left after working there for five years. In 1982 she started her private practice and established Journeys Counseling Center, Inc., in Woodland Park and Cripple Creek, CO where she is currently seeing clients. After establishing her private practice, Barbara’s focus turned more fully to Trauma Recovery along with Substance Abuse. She continued her education by taking dozens of training seminars, classes, and workshops with Trauma Recovery as her primary focus. Barbara received certifications in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) in 1977; EMDR II (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) in 1995; and Hypnosis and Regression Therapy in 2004. In 2007 Barbara was asked to join Sacred Hoop Ministry as the Mental Health Director, and she is currently a member of their Board of Directors. She continues her studies in PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury, and trauma recovery, and has recently received certification as a Brain Injury Therapist. Barbara brings an integrative approach to trauma recovery for her clients, and works with individuals, couples, and families, by way of private sessions, and/or group therapy using whatever techniques are appropriate for that client in order to quickly move through, and come to resolution with whatever issue is blocking the balance within their lives. She also teaches classes and workshops on various relevant issues and topics in Woodland Park, and Cripple Creek, CO. |
